SUMMER ACADEMICS PROGRAMS 2011: Note: Bring a lunch and stay all day for less: Receive a 10% discount when you enroll in both morning and afternoon academics: 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. for $180 per weekly session Summer Afternoon Academics - Small Group Tutoring (for Grades entering 1-4 and 5-8 this fall): Program description: This summer academic program places students into small groups for targeted tutoring. Attending students will be assessed for their placement level in literacy and math. Grade level understandings needed for success in the fall will also be evaluated. Lessons cover key skills expected of students in each grade level and additional practice in any identified areas of aptitude or deficiency. The foreign language component of the course is designed to foster continuing student interest and enthusiasm for learning a second language. Second language learning is expected in all college preparatory programs and helps students to improve their English language mechanics, including: spelling, punctuation, and grammar. Lessons will cover: time management, general materials organization, how to start, organize, and finish projects/papers, research and reference skills, reading for content and understanding. Students will learn tips and techniques for success and choose options that work best for them. Arts-travaganza! Students will learn the history of selected art forms as they explore creative techniques and produce one-of-a-kind artwork. Mediums studied include: clay/pottery, drawing/cartooning, and multifaceted arts and crafts. Cooking Science Physical science is fun when the chemistry and lab experiments include the kitchen! Students will also practice and reinforce key understandings in math as they study and perform labs on the science behind food, cooking, and chemical change. Publish Your Book Calling all authors, illustrators, and book lovers to this book publishing class! Students will study selected authors, generate story ideas, write a book, make illustrations, print and bind a final publication.
